This stylish enamel bangle highlights the detailing on a fabulous vase (ca. 1900) by Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) in The Met collection. In the early 1890s, the Gilded Age designer developed a method of blending colors in glass while it was still in a molten state to achieve subtle effects of shading and texture. He called the results “Favrile” (from
fabrile
, an Old English word meaning “hand-wrought”), and was duly celebrated for the ingenious development.
