This artful “M” comes from
Divina proportione
(1509), a book of woodcut illustrations in The Met collection by the Franciscan mathematician and theorist Fra Luca Pacioli (Italian, ca. 1445–ca. 1514). Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s (Italian, 1452–1519)
Vitruvian Man
, a study of ideal anatomical proportions, Pacioli perfected the construction of the Roman alphabet according to geometric principles, stressing the shape of simple, monumental letters. From 1971 until 2016, the Museum reimagined Pacioli’s “M” as a beloved logo treatment, which we’ve revived on this tee.
